It was discovered by Professor Naomi J. Halas and her team at RICE University in Houston in 2003.

Nanoshell - a spherical nanoparticle consisting of a dielectric  core which is covered by a thin

metallic shell (Usually Gold). Used in the treatment of cancer.

This abstract shows these little gold colored particles in solution.
